Humorista estadounidense. Estudió actuación y comenzó a presentar rutinas humorísticas en clubes nocturnos en la década de 1950, y en breve desarrolló un estilo que se distinguió por el humor negro salpicado de obscenidades. A medida que obtenía notoriedad, centró su material en críticas a las instituciones sociales y legales, la religión organizada y otros temas polémicos. Tras su muerte, a causa de una sobredosis de droga, su figura se elevó a la condición de icono, en calidad de artista provocativo y activista de la libertad de expresión.
